WCHS-TV8 – Mountain Rail Offering Summer Adventures
ELKINS, W.Va. – Experience West Virginia’s high mountain country during the last days of summer with the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. The Cass Scenic Railroad is one of the railroad’s most popular Mountain Rail Adventure destinations and is offering a full operating schedule and special nighttime train excursions during the month of August.
This month, visitors can celebrate the final days of summer with steam-powered train rides from historic downtown Cass. Each Tuesday through Sunday, 1.5 hour round trip train rides to Whittaker Station will depart from Cass Depot at 10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Passengers will tour the entire length of the Cass Scenic Railroad with a 4.5 hour round trip ride to Bald Knob.
On Friday Aug. 14, passengers will get the opportunity to travel to Whittaker Station from Cass Depot on a 2.5 hour round train ride that leaves from Cass at 8p.m. Once at Whittaker, riders will experience the forming logging campsite under the stars before returning to Cass at 10:30 p.m.
A final full moon trip of the 2015 season departs Cass Depot on Saturday, Aug. 29 with a 5.5hour round trip from historic Cass to Bald Knob. This excursion ascends Cass Hill to Whittaker Station, upward to Spruce, and all the way to the 4,843 foot summit of Bald Knob to experience the full moon, weather permitting. A Moon Pie and RC Cola are included in the ticket price. This train departs at 7p.m. and returns shortly after midnight.
